Improving on an invention is not the easiest thing to do. And after it has been improved, all you can say is ‘ah, good idea’ or ‘well, that makes sense’ maybe even a ‘why didn’t I think of that?’
===============================================
Here are some I’ve seen…

The little indent on the plastic wrapper is where you should start your tear/rip to open the packaging.

(p.s. the cookie wasn’t too bad either!)
==============================================
Something as trivial as putting plastic wrap on leftover food or to wrap up a sandwich should take more than a tear, but to get the plastic wrap out can be a hassle. How can you get a finger on the plastic wrap before you tear it off? Seemingly a simple idea, and for manufacturers, consumers, packaging, etc…. looking for simple ideas that work is most important. Here’s what I found…
==============================================
So you buy a bento or something in a plastic container, usually with food in it, and on many of the packages there is cellophane tape. And in some cases, it would be nice to be able to open the package quickly.
Here is the idea. Lengthwise the tape is strong, to keep contents ‘taped’ in, but crosswise, the tape is quite weak, allowing you to rip the tape easily to get the package open.

This tape from 7-11 has some slits already cut into it. (I can’t remember what I ate though…!)
======================================================
Everybody has seen this, right?
Jam on one side, margarine on the other… fold the two together and it creates an opening for both the contents to come out, evenly.
What have you seen that kind of takes things with a new twist?

We went snow shoeing today and used these things called little hotties. They are in bags just like these you photographed. They really keep your hands warm… http://alesiablogs.wordpress.com/2013/01/28/locked-in/
I should have taken a photo of them like you did.haha
Interesting post
I was in Japan about ten years ago and between manhole covers and everyday packaging design I went nuts taking pictures. I’d love to return some day, it’s my favorite place on earth.
i have a bunch of manhole covers too…!
I shot mine a while ago with film. Can’t wait to go back with a digital camera… so much great detail in Japan. Keep up the great work, I’m living vicariously through your images…
Oooh how I miss the fact that all packages have some sort of a way to be opened in Japan! And everything comes along so easily. People care about the tiniest of details, instead of calling them off as trivial matters.
so true.. japanese at heart.. engineer it till there is nothing left! lol
