Japanese beef. Lots of marbling of fat and meat. Should make for a juicy steak!
This picture is actually from more than a week ago, and has been sitting on my phone… finally a decent chance to upload for a daily photo!
Oh, and if you get to the story later in the evening, many of the products go ‘on sale.’ In this case, all of the steaks went on a half price sale! what a deal… maybe. It was still more than 2,300 for this 294 gram piece of sirloin raised in Fukushima, oh dear!
All of the beef has been registered with the government so they can regulate where it came from, where it was processed etc. You can see the barcode in the upper left on the sticker. Not sure if that is the cow’s barcode or the farm’s barcode though!

I would love to cook up that piece of meat!! yum yum!
it looked good.. but still pretty expensive!
By my calculations, this beef is being sold at about $44 a pound. No wonder they have to offer it at half price.
and that is probably a cheap price (per lb.!!)
Actually, I think the price has dropped a little since I lived in Japan. Still too expensive.
i was thinking about this a while ago, but never made the actual conversion… sale price is about $40 per pound, but original price is obviously double, so about $80 per pound. And they will slap the 30% off price at about 4pm, and the 50% off a few hours later… So if you went there in the morning looking for a steak lunch, well, if you wanted this piece, you’d have to pay for it!!
